Six running shoes, 400 miles, and the measurement that predicted nothing

We logged 400 miles across six pairs and measured midsole compression throughout. The shoes that degraded least were not the ones testers preferred at the end.

The advice to replace running shoes every 300 to 500 miles rests on midsole foam losing its ability to compress and rebound. We tested whether that holds by measuring it.

Six pairs, four testers, 400 logged miles per pair on a mix of pavement and packed trail. We measured midsole thickness under a fixed load at 0, 100, 200, 300 and 400 miles.

What the measurement showed

Compression at 400 miles ranged from 9 percent to 24 percent across the six models. Two supercritical foam models retained their geometry notably better than the conventional EVA models, which matches the manufacturers’ claims.

Tester preference at the end of the test did not track those numbers in any direction. The pair testers ranked most worn out had the second-lowest measured compression. The pair with the worst compression was still described as comfortable by three of four testers.

What did predict it

Outsole wear pattern correlated far better with tester complaints. Where the rubber wore through at the lateral heel or under the first metatarsal, testers reported discomfort regardless of what the midsole measured — because the shoe was no longer sitting level, changing the angle at footstrike.

That is a check anyone can do without instruments: put the shoes on a flat table at eye level and look at whether they sit square.

The honest conclusion is that mileage is a poor rule and a convenient one. Replace when the shoe stops sitting flat, when a familiar route starts producing an unfamiliar ache, or when the outsole has worn through to the midsole — whichever comes first, whatever the odometer says.
